This 24-page book is part of a American “Real Life Stories” series that was published specifically for school libraries. I followed a detailed template and had to create text to fit a certain reading level. Linked to the social studies curriculum, this book describes the daily life of women pioneers in the mid-1800s. The central spread detailing home remedies found in the kitchen was particularly interesting to me. For example, settlers ate white onions to help them sleep. Although I knew pioneer life was challenging, I was amazed by many of the facts I learned while researching this book. Access the full text here.
