As the News Goes Public

It’s been a month since the closure of KNOW and YES Mag. Last night I read this beautiful piece, posted on the blog “Canadian Magazines: News, Views and Reviews of the Canadian Magazine Industry.” Click here to read it–you’ll be glad you did. With compassion and insight the writer (it was posted by D. B. Scott) explains the way Dave Garrison and Shannon Hunt created the magazines from scratch. The blog provides further insight into the relationship with Mad Science.

And me, what’s up? Well, I’ve had two small paying jobs in the last couple weeks. I may have to sidestep into academic publishing because the elementary and secondary markets seem to be fairly flat. I’d love to edit children’s books.

Hello? Anyone there? Enthusiastic writer and editor available for hire!

I found my way to this because I sat down at the computer to contact KNOW, hoping to find out where my child’s much-anticipated current issue is. He’s been checking the mailbox every day for a few weeks. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for your contributions to a great magazine. KNOW was so much better than the other children’s science magazines. I always felt that every article assumed that the children reading it were intelligent beings with perfectly adequate attention spans. I’m sorry that it folded, and that it happened in such a callous manner.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write, Jill. I’m sorry that your son isn’t getting the March/April issue of KNOW, or any more issues. It’s good to hear that KNOW was so well loved. I hope your son’s passion for science continues to grow!
